Commuter Benefits MetroCard vs OMNY: Which Saves You More Money?

When deciding how to pay for your subway commute, you can sign up for pre-tax commuter benefits, which can help you save money by using pre-tax dollars, and get a monthly unlimited MetroCard or use a regular subway swipe/OMNY tap to pay for your rides. OMNY is supposed to automatically track your swipes so every ride after 12 taps on your card is free.

Figuring out which option saves you the most money depends on your salary and how many subway rides you take each week, so we built this handy calculator for you to use:

Note: OMNY isn’t the most reliable when it comes to getting free rides after your 12th tap. Sometimes people get double charged or find out that their card and their phone taps aren’t being recognized as the same. You might end up paying more than you expect when using OMNY.
